What Is SUBD?

SUBD is the world’s first Freestyle Grappling League. Teams of elite grapplers take turns performing high-level grappling sequences on their own teammate. The opposing team must replicate the exact sequence in one attempt. Fail — earn a letter. Spell S-U-B-D and you’re out.

The Format

How It Works

Perform
Athlete A performs a legal grappling sequence ending in a submission on their own teammate.
›

Declare
Athlete A clearly states the full sequence aloud, in order, to the opposing team.
›

Replicate
Athlete B must replicate the exact same sequence on their own teammate in one attempt.
›
4
Miss = Letter
A failed replication earns one letter toward S-U-B-D. No partial credit awarded.
5
SUBD = Out
First team to earn all four letters — S, U, B, D — is immediately eliminated.
Core Rules

The Ruleset

Designed for athletes. Built for spectators. No gray areas.

01Teams consist of 3 active athletes and 2 alternates.
02Each team has one designated captain.
03Athletes perform all techniques on their own teammate (uke).
04Alternates may serve as uke at any time during competition.
05All techniques must be legal, controlled, and executed safely.
06Each sequence must end in a submission attempt.
07Sequences may include throws, sweeps, passes, back takes, transitions, and submissions.
08Maximum sequence length: 4 movements plus the finishing submission.
09No pauses, resets, coaching, or repositioning once the sequence begins.
10One attempt only — no re-dos.
11Pure hit-or-miss scoring. No partial credit.
12No judges unless needed for safety or rule enforcement.
13A failed replication earns one letter.
14Spelling S-U-B-D results in immediate elimination.
